Lo scorso 23 aprile 2023 Gordon Boettger - noto recordman statunitense ed ex pilota imbarcato - ha realizzato uno spettacolare volo notturno di ca. 250nm (weglide) a Minden (Nevada).
Grazie all'impiego di occhiali a visione notturna (NGV) ha potuto sfruttare l'energia ondulatoria sottovento alla Sierra Madre.

Some “next level” stuff flying a glider at night with Night Vision Goggles (NVG’s). This reminds me a lot of landing on aircraft carriers at night when I was in the Navy. It takes a whole lot of concentration especially landing on a totally dark runway with no runway lights. The whole purpose of this “crazy” stuff is to expand soaring flight distances using mountain wave so that soon I can hopefully achieve a 2 day flight downwind into the central United States. This makes it possible. The NVGs are currently used by the military and all instruments are specially coated so they don’t “blow out” the NVG’s.
